Sharing My Zimbabwean Dreams

Two pairs of eyes never leave my face

I weave a tale of Zimbabwe: special sun burnt place

Electric blue sky: shimmering heat

Pulse of Africa beneath my feet

A land full of magic where elephants roam

Rhinos, lions and buffalo call it home

Giraffes so slender, long and tall

Laughing hyenas with their ‘whoop whoop’ call

Raging rivers: Kariba’s sultry breeze

Stinging needle like rain: Russet trees

Melancholy call of a fish eagle way up high

Cruising the empty air pockets under a Zimbabwean sky

Footprints

‘TELL US MORE’, EYES SHINING BRIGHT

MY TWO LITTLE ANGELS: MY SHINING LIGHTS

Footprints

Rural African women with backs so straight

Drum of water balancing on their heads: a deadly weight

Africa’s night: seductive and black

Pale luminous half moon lying on her back

Night shadows drift and darkness fades

Miracle of dawn emerges with splashes of pink and gold braid

Passionate winds snake through the grass

A short sharp crisp winter soon comes to pass

The sun warms up: Our African pride

Rays thrown open like arms held wide

Tranquil bird calls chorus with ease

Earthy scents: tantalise and tease

Footprints

‘MORE ABOUT ELEPHANTS’, THEIR SMILES OPEN WIDE

JUMPING UP AND DOWN TRUMPETING BY MY SIDE

Footprints

African Elephants: fold upon fold of splendour

A love so powerful: they do engender

Sunshine licks them with a golden glow

On them the creator, magnificence did bestow

Footprints

‘WHY DO MEN WANT TO KILL THEM?’

I LOWER MY VOICE

‘WE ALL KNOW WHATS RIGHT: WE ALL HAVE A CHOICE.’

Footprints

Creamy tusks more valuable than gold

And for a price on their heads man can be cajoled

The poaching of elephants: despicable and tragic

Their tusks are incisors: they hold no magic

My heart is hammering: stretching tight

My two little angels have gone deathly quiet

Tears creep out and down my cheeks

For my country, my animals…my soul, I weep.
