‘A World Without Elephants’

The tawny pelt of Africa caressed by an easterly breeze

Psychedelic sunset… stretching high above the trees

Earthy sweet scents of evening linger…motionless and warm

An orchestra of crickets…chirping as they perform

Indigo hues deepen …midges hover in the air

The warm cloak of early evening…the last of daylight’s glare

The sky bursts open..a star spangled parade

Peaceful glow of night? or Africa’s charade?

Heavy opulent creature…ponderous in her tread

Creamy ivory tusks..bejeweling her noble head

Capering beside her…a small calf full of spunk

Intricate fissures cross hatching over the perfect trunk

Over sized Africa shaped ears…fanning the sticky breeze

Two wrinkled cows…like sentries…watchful among the trees

A complex social structure glued together by love

The very essence of life…bestowed from above

A family of female elephants bonding over many years

Robbed of their personal treasures..their world shrouded in fear

Shadows drift and the hush of darkness fades

Dawn emerges…veined in gold braid

Night passes into day..the hands of time continue to flow

Evolution’s slow magic on our magical world did bestow

The spirit of an elephant….a part of this timeless land

‘A world without Elephants’?

Destruction by the human hand
